On August 31, 2024, gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked motorists on a highway in Zamfara State, Nigeria. They blocked the Damri to Bakura road and hijacked two fully loaded buses, abducting all the passengers aboard.A witness, sharing information on social media, described the situation as alarming, noting the brazen nature of the attack in broad daylight. This incident underscores the severe security challenges in Nigeria’s northwest region, where banditry and terrorism have become rampant.Zamfara State, along with neighboring regions such as Katsina, Kaduna, and Niger, has been plagued by criminal gangs that conduct raids, loot villages, and carry out mass kidnappings. Despite a peace agreement made in 2019 under former governor Bello Matawalle, who is now Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, attacks and kidnappings have continued unabated in the state. The recent incident reflects the ongoing insecurity and the inability of security measures to effectively deter such brazen acts of terrorism.
