Flood Sweeps 33 Communities In Gombe State, Destroys Over 2500 Houses

On August 31, 2024, Gombe State experienced severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall, leading to substantial damage across 33 communities. The Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported that the floods had destroyed approximately 2,517 houses and shops in the affected areas.Ibrahim Nalado, the deputy director of Relief and Rehabilitation at SEMA, shared these details during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe. The most impacted areas include Dukku, Funakaye, and Billiri Local Government Areas (LGAs). Although there were no fatalities, two children were injured in Dukku LGA, and seven animals were lost due to the floods.The Hina community in Yamaltu/Deba LGA was particularly hard-hit, with around 1,000 hectares of farmlands—growing rice, maize, sorghum, and millet—being submerged. Farmers, who were on the verge of harvesting their crops, expressed deep concern but accepted the situation as a natural event.In a related incident, Yobe State also suffered from flooding, which destroyed about 1,650 houses in Jajere and Yunusari towns.The widespread flooding has highlighted the vulnerability of these regions to extreme weather events and the significant impact on local communities and agriculture.
