Nyesom Wike, former governor of Rivers State and current Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has issued a stern warning to fellow governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against meddling in the political affairs of Rivers State. This warning follows recent tensions between Wike and the PDP leadership, particularly concerning the governance of Rivers State. On August 23, 2024, PDP governors convened in Taraba State to address the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. During this meeting, the governors expressed their support for the current Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and called for a review of recent party congress outcomes to reinforce Fubara’s leadership. The PDP Governors’ Forum, led by its Chairman, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, supported this call for restoring Fubara’s authority. In response to these developments, Wike delivered a defiant message at a PDP congress held in Port Harcourt on August 31, 2024. He emphasized his refusal to let anyone undermine the PDP structure in Rivers State, claiming that any attempt to do so would result in severe consequences. Wike accused some governors of becoming overconfident due to recent financial gains and warned them against trying to impose their will on Rivers State. He declared that such interference would be met with a strong retaliation, threatening that any governor attempting to challenge his authority would face similar disruption in their own state.Wike’s remarks underscore the intense political rivalry between him and Fubara, which has contributed to the current crisis within the PDP. His comments reflect broader tensions and power struggles within the party, highlighting the fractious nature of Nigerian politics and the complex dynamics at play in the governance of Rivers State.
