The Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria (GCSDN), a diaspora group, has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all detained #EndBadGovernance protesters. In a statement issued by its Global Coordinator, Comrade Frederick Odorige, the group criticized the Nigerian government for its handling of the protesters, arguing that their detention undermines democracy and embarrasses Nigerians abroad. The GCSDN asserted that such actions diminish the respect for Nigerian citizens’ rights abroad, as other countries see these violations as a reflection of the broader disregard for rights in Nigeria. They also condemned the government’s harsh legal charges against the protesters, such as treason and coup accusations, which they claim are inconsistent given that the country continues to grant pensions to past coup plotters like Ibrahim Babangida and Muhammadu Buhari. The statement highlighted the severe economic conditions in Nigeria, worsened by ongoing corruption and insecurity. The group criticized the government for failing to prosecute corrupt officials, and for the lack of transparency in the handling of recovered funds. They argued that public money is being misappropriated and hidden, exacerbating the nation’s economic issues.GCSDN also criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for not addressing past corruption adequately, including the failure to hold former President Buhari accountable or recover misappropriated funds. They noted that Tinubu, as the ECOWAS chairman, should set an example in respecting human rights, contrasting his current approach with his past anti-military stance. The group argued that effective governance is the key to reducing protests. They urged the government to focus on improving governance rather than suppressing dissent. They emphasized that genuine progress and reconciliation in Nigeria require the release of political detainees, modernization of agriculture, reliable electricity, and a strong commitment to fighting terrorism. In summary, the GCSDN called for the Nigerian government to prioritize the rights of its citizens, enhance transparency, and address critical issues to restore trust and foster genuine progress in the country.
