Youth Rights Campaign Accuses Gov Sanwo-Olu Of Commercialising Education Over Hike In Lagos Model Colleges’ Feeding Fees

The Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) has criticized Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the recent increase in feeding fees at Lagos Model Colleges, which has risen from N35,000 to N100,000. This 186% hike has led to widespread condemnation from parents and prompted protests at various model colleges, including Eva Adelaja Girls Grammar School in Bariga. The Parents’ Forum of Lagos Model Colleges has voiced their dissatisfaction, stating they will not allow their children to resume school until the fees are reversed. Surv. Dapo Dawodu, Chairman of the Parents’ Forum, condemned the increase as a manifestation of “greed” by the Lagos State Ministry of Education officials. He argued that this fee hike, amounting to N100 million per term if applied to a school with 1,000 students, represents a significant burden on parents and is indicative of corruption within the ministry. In response to the fee hike, Francis Nwapa, the National Secretary of YRC, accused Governor Sanwo-Olu of being insensitive and criticized his administration for exacerbating the challenges in public education. Nwapa compared the current situation to the policies of former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu, now at the federal level, who has been accused of contributing to the deterioration of public education through commercialization. The YRC emphasizes that education should be considered a right rather than a privilege and argues that the commercialization of education excludes the majority of Nigerians who cannot afford the increased costs. They call on Nigerians to support their fight against what they see as a deliberate attempt to make education accessible only to the wealthy. The controversy highlights growing concerns over the affordability of education in Lagos State and the broader implications of rising costs on access to public schooling.
