#EdoDecides: PDP Rejects Governorship Election Results Over Alleged Irregularities, Petitions Electoral Body, INEC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially rejected the results of the Edo State governorship election held on September 21, 2024, citing significant irregularities in the electoral process. PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo secured 247,274 votes, placing second to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, who was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).In a petition submitted to INEC, PDP collation agent Dr. Iyoha Tony highlighted serious breaches in the electoral process, particularly the alleged failure to use the mandatory Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for voter accreditation in Edo North. He accused INEC officials of improperly collating results, moving the collation from designated locations to the INEC headquarters, which he claims facilitated manipulation of the results. The petition, signed by Edo State PDP Chairman Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, emphasizes that the actions taken by INEC violate established regulations governing the election process. Specifically, the PDP calls for the return of all result collation to lawful venues at the ward and local government levels, as required by INEC guidelines. It also demands an inquiry into discrepancies between the number of accredited voters and the votes reported, particularly in several local government areas where the BVAS records do not align with the results. The PDP’s concerns center on allegations of misconduct by electoral officers, asserting that the process was not conducted in accordance with INEC’s regulations, particularly Parts III Paragraphs 44-49, which outline the required procedures for result collation. As the political landscape remains tense following the election, the PDP’s challenge to INEC signals potential legal battles ahead, as they seek to ensure that the electoral process is upheld and any irregularities addressed.
