Gunmen Hit Jos Leaves Dozens Dead, Curfew Imposed
Gunmen launched a deadly assault on communities in Jos, the capital of Plateau State in north-central Nigeria, leaving at least 20 people dead and several others injured, according to residents and officials. The attack, which occurred late Sunday night, has heightened tensions in a region long plagued by recurring violence.
Witnesses reported that armed men arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately in the Jos North area, causing panic as residents fled for safety. Authorities confirmed casualties but initially did not release an exact figure, while local sources suggested the toll could be higher.
Some reports indicated that gunmen targeted a bar in the city, killing at least a dozen people, after which retaliatory mob violence led to additional deaths, pushing the total number of casualties to more than 20.
Following the attack, Plateau State authorities imposed a 48-hour curfew in parts of Jos North to prevent further violence and restore order. Security forces were deployed to patrol affected areas and deter reprisal attacks.
Officials also urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue. No group has claimed responsibility for the assault, but authorities say the incident reflects ongoing insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
Plateau State has experienced repeated outbreaks of violence linked to disputes over land and grazing routes between farming communities and pastoralist groups. These clashes often escalate into broader communal conflict, particularly in mixed religious and ethnic areas such as Jos.
Community leaders and organizations condemned the killings, calling for stronger security measures to protect civilians and prevent further bloodshed.
The latest attack adds to a series of deadly incidents in Nigeria’s north-central region in recent months, raising concerns about worsening security conditions and the vulnerability of local communities. Authorities say investigations are ongoing as security forces continue operations to track down the perpetrators.
