Owo Community Urges Governor Aiyedatiwa to Appoint Deputy Governor from Their Town

Indigenes of Owo community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, the hometown of the late ex-Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, have urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to consider appointing his deputy from their community.
The Imade Development Association (IDA), a socio-cultural group representing the indigenes, believes that by choosing a deputy from Owo, Governor Aiyedatiwa would be honouring the memory of his late predecessor.
Following the untimely passing of Akeredolu, who succumbed to prostate cancer in Germany, the IDA has expressed deep sorrow over the loss and emphasized the significance of ensuring the town’s representation in the state’s leadership.
During a press briefing, the IDA’s Chairman, Segun Ogunbadeniyi, along with the Secretary, Femi Fadaisi, and the Publicity Secretary, Julius Adesola, asserted that it is the community’s earnest desire for Governor Aiyedatiwa to select a deputy from Owo.
According to Ogunbadeniyi, the existing joint ticket, which is due to expire in February 2025, represents Owo/Ilaje, and any deviation from this arrangement could lead to further polarization along ethnic and political lines in the state.
The group emphasised that there are several qualified individuals from Owo who could serve as deputy governor, including Hon. Niran-Sule Akinsuyi, who actively supported Akeredolu during the 2016 elections, the Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, Mr. Zach Adetula, and Chief Jamiu Ekungba.
In their view, selecting from this pool of candidates would be equitable and in line with the current joint ticket between Akeredolu and Aiyedatiwa.
The IDA has made it clear that they will continue to advocate for the appointment of a deputy governor from Owo until their request is addressed by the governor’s office.
