NRC to Launch Expanded Train Services to Port-Harcourt-Aba and Lagos to Kano Routes in the First Quarter of 2024

Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), has announced plans to introduce new train services in the first quarter of 2024. These services will include the Port-Harcourt-Aba and Lagos to Kano routes, catering to both passengers and freight transportation.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Okhiria disclosed that the corporation aims to increase its Standard Gauge Train trips to six daily across various routes. This expansion is part of the NRC’s efforts to enhance its operations and meet the growing demand for railway services.
Okhiria explained that while the railway was initially intended to operate 24 hours a day, security concerns in the country have led to a reduction in nighttime operations. However, the NRC is committed to increasing the number of trips to accommodate passenger and freight transportation needs.
The MD highlighted that the NRC faced challenges with vandalism, particularly in the Warri-Itakpe area in 2023. However, swift action was taken to address the issue and ensure the smooth functioning of the railway system.
Looking ahead, Okhiria emphasized the potential impact of expanded railway services on the economy, stating that freight trains operating across the country would lead to a significant reduction in commodity prices. He also noted the interest expressed by various dry ports, such as Dala, Funtua, and Kaduna, in partnering with the NRC for freight haulage.
In terms of staffing, Okhiria mentioned that the NRC had recruited junior staff and was awaiting government approval to finalize their employment. He expressed confidence that these new hires would contribute to improving the corporation’s overall efficiency.
In conclusion, Okhiria praised the government’s efforts in expanding the railway network across Nigeria and encouraged the public to embrace rail transportation as a reliable and efficient means of travel.
