Labour Party Calls for Reduction of Government Spending on Comforts for Ruling Class in 2024 Budget

In a special New Year message issued by the Labour Party and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party has urged the Federal Government to reconsider the allocation of funds in the 2024 budget. According to the party, there is a need to redirect resources towards the welfare and security of Nigerians, rather than focusing on the comforts of the ruling class.

The Labour Party expressed concern that the 2024 budget, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, does not adequately prioritize critical sectors of the economy. Instead, it appears to prioritize the comfort of those in power at the expense of the majority of Nigerians.

Highlighting specific allocations, the party pointed out that while sectors like Education and Health were allocated relatively small percentages of the budget at 7.9% and 4.8% respectively, there were significant sums dedicated to items such as a Senate Car Park (N3 billion), Constitution Review (N1 billion), and allocations for the National Assembly including N78.62 billion for the House of Representatives and N36.727 billion for the National Assembly Office.

The Labour Party emphasized the need for a shift in priorities, urging the government to reconsider its allocation strategy to ensure that the welfare and security of ordinary Nigerians take precedence. The party believes that this reallocation of resources is essential to address the challenges faced by Nigerians due to what it describes as maladministration and insensitive government policies.

In conclusion, the Labour Party called for a reassessment of the 2024 budget to ensure that it reflects the needs and priorities of the Nigerian people, particularly in areas concerning their welfare and security.
