Governor Akeredolu Hands Over to Deputy Amidst Health Challenges

Amid mounting health concerns, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has decided to delegate his responsibilities to Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, resisting calls from influential figures, including President Bola Tinubu, to step down.
The decision, announced through a statement by Akeredolu’s spokesman, Richard Olatunde, comes as the governor plans to proceed on medical leave from December 13 due to ongoing health challenges, suspected to be related to a cancerous condition that has affected him throughout the year.
The official statement conveyed that a letter detailing the medical leave and formally transferring power to Aiyedatiwa, in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution, will be sent to the House of Assembly. In the absence of Governor Akeredolu, Deputy Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa will assume the role of acting governor.
The statement expressed Akeredolu’s appreciation for the unwavering support and affection of the people of Ondo State, affirming the administration’s commitment to the state’s progress and prosperity.
The move comes following a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and various political actors from Ondo State at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
During the meeting, the president reportedly suggested Akeredolu’s resignation as a suitable solution to the ongoing crisis.
Governor Akeredolu, who has not been seen in public for over eight months, has faced persistent pressure to resign, but his family members, including his son, have not taken steps to compel his resignation.
This lack of action may contribute to prolonging the political crisis in the state.
