Makinde meets Obasanjo, says talks focused on Nigeria’s future ahead of general election
Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where they discussed national issues ahead of the forthcoming general election.
Makinde disclosed the visit in a post shared on his official social media account on Sunday.
According to the governor, the meeting focused on matters affecting the country and preparations ahead of the next general election, “Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR in Abeokuta. Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election. We appreciate Baba for his wise counsel at this crucial time in our nation’s history,” Makinde wrote.
Although Makinde did not reveal the specific issues discussed, the visit comes at a time when political consultations are increasing across the country ahead of the 2027 general election.
The meeting was also attended by former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, and former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
Former President Obasanjo has remained an influential statesman since leaving office in 2007. Over the years, presidents, governors, presidential aspirants and other political leaders have frequently visited him at his Abeokuta residence to seek advice, particularly during election periods.
The visit also comes months after Makinde formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the PDP-APM alliance. At the time, he argued that Nigeria needs a fresh direction and called for stronger cooperation among opposition forces to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative.
