Osogbo residents raise alarm over illegal mining near Osun River

Due to the activities of illegal miners, residents of Aberensise Akinlade Estate in Osogbo, Osun State, have come out to express concern over hazards caused by illegal miners in the community.

The residents made this available to InsideOsogbo, a community online medium created to amplify happenings within the state, on Tuesday, 20th 2025, lament over the domination of illegal gold miners who have captured their community.

“Residents of Aberensise Akinlade Estate, located about 6.6 km from the Ọ̀sun River, along Iléṣà Garage, Òṣogbo, have raised serious concerns over the increasing activities of suspected illegal gold miners who have reportedly taken over large parts of the community.”

They expressed how the mining activities have begun to affect the water system, soil and building due to the heavy mechanical appliances.

“These activities are already having adverse effects on their environment, including land degradation, destruction of farmlands, threats to buildings, and growing fears of water contamination, especially given the estate’s proximity to the Ọ̀sun River.”

More importantly, they lament the health risk, the movement of people, which is a major safety concern, and the adverse effect this illegal mining will cause permanently in their community.

“The situation has also heightened concerns around public safety, health risks, and long-term environmental damage.”
