Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Mark, Others Join ‘Save Democracy’ Protest in Abuja
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate in the last elections Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have joined the ongoing Save Democracy protest in Abuja over the decision of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from its website.
Also present at the protest is former Senate President David Mark, whose leadership of the ADC was recently removed from the INEC portal.
INEC had earlier announced that it would not recognise any leadership of the opposition ADC following a ruling by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria in Abuja.
Last week, the court delivered its judgment in Case No. CA/ABJ/145/2026 (Mark v Gombe & Ors), ordering that the status quo ante bellum—meaning the situation before the dispute, should be maintained. INEC interpreted the ruling as requiring the removal of David Mark and the party’s secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, from its portal.
The decision has sparked protests by supporters of different political movements and groups. Members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, the Obidient Movement, and members of the ADC have taken to the streets of Abuja.
The protesters are marching toward the INEC headquarters, demanding the removal of the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, have mounted barricades around the area to control the growing crowd of demonstrators.
