Nigeria succumbed to the classic trap of the rentier state, a structural economic phenomenon extensively detailed by Richard M. Auty in Sustaining Development in Mineral Economies: The Resource Curse Thesis (Routledge, 1993) and further analyzed by Terry Lynn Karl in The Paradox of Plenty: Oil Booms and Petro-States (University of California Press, 1997). The sudden flood of oil dollars led policymakers to adopt unhedged fiscal spending models that expanded rapidly during price surges and collapsed violently during market crashes, creating devastating economic cycles. Agriculture and domestic manufacturing were largely abandoned, while public revenue was funneled through centralized patronage networks rather than being protected for long-term reserves, as highlighted by Xavier Sala-i-Martin and Arvind Subramanian in their study “Addressing the Natural Resource Curse: An Illustration from Nigeria” (Journal of African Economies, Vol. 22, No. 4, 2013, pp. 570–615). Local communities in the Niger Delta ultimately bore the environmental costs of extraction without a matching reinvestment in regional infrastructure.
