TUC Urges Swift Action on N35,000 Wage Award and Debt Concerns

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called upon the federal government to promptly resume the payment of the N35,000 wage award promised to workers by President Tinubu.
In his Independence Day address, President Tinubu had announced the N35,000 wage award as a six-month palliative for workers following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
However, TUC emphasized that the payment, part of the agreement between the Federal Government and organized labour, has not been repeated since October.
Festus Osifo, President of TUC, addressed reporters after the National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.
He urged the government to expedite the processes and remove any bottlenecks hindering the continuous payment of the wage award.
Osifo also commended state governments that have committed to paying the N35,000 wage and called on the private sector to fulfill its obligations regarding the wage award.
During the NEC session, the TUC expressed concern about Nigeria’s increasing debt situation, particularly with the recently submitted budget to the National Assembly.
Osifo highlighted the budget deficit and the growing daily borrowing, emphasizing the challenge of servicing the escalating debt with national revenue.
Osifo urged the federal government to promptly address this issue and adopt fiscal prudence in managing the country’s scarce resources.
In addressing the ongoing hardships faced by the people, Osifo called on governments at all levels to exercise fiscal prudence and make responsible financial decisions.
TUC stressed the importance of managing the country’s resources efficiently to alleviate the suffering of the populace.
