Outrage as Nigerian Judge Orders Sowore Lawyer to Kneel in Court Room

A Nigerian judge has come under intense criticism after reportedly ordering a lawyer to kneel during court proceedings, sparking outrage across the country’s legal community.

The incident occurred at the Federal High Court in Abuja and involved Justice Mohammed Umar and lawyer Marshall Abubakar, who was representing activist Omoyele Sowore.

According to reports, tensions rose during proceedings when the defence counsel challenged aspects of the case and requested adjustments to the hearing schedule.

The situation escalated after the lawyer raised his voice while addressing the court, prompting the judge to order him to step forward and kneel as punishment for alleged contempt. The action of the judge was considered a joke taken too far.
However, the lawyer reportedly refused, arguing that such a directive was not recognised under Nigerian law.

Other lawyers present in the courtroom intervened, appealing to the judge to de-escalate the situation before proceedings were eventually adjourned.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) strongly condemned the incident, describing it as inconsistent with judicial standards and the dignity of the legal profession.

In a statement, the association emphasised that ordering a lawyer—or any individual—to kneel in court is not a recognised judicial sanction under Nigerian law.

The NBA stressed that while judges have the authority to maintain order and discipline, such powers must be exercised within established legal procedures and with respect for human dignity.

The incident has triggered widespread reactions from legal practitioners, activists, and members of the public. Some critics described the directive as humiliating and a misuse of judicial authority, while others warned that such actions could undermine confidence in the justice system.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong was among those who condemned the reported order, stating that “corporal punishment has no place in the temple of justice.”

Legal analysts say the controversy highlights ongoing concerns about courtroom conduct and the balance of power between judges and lawyers in Nigeria.

The NBA has called for calm while indicating it may engage relevant authorities to ensure that judicial ethics and professional standards are upheld.

The incident has reignited debate over judicial accountability and respect for legal practitioners in Nigeria. As scrutiny grows, many observers say the outcome could have lasting implications for public trust in the country’s legal system.
